Job Summary:

The Correctional Officer is responsible for the supervision, safety, and security of inmates housed at the Roane County Detention Facility. This role ensures a secure environment by enforcing rules, monitoring inmate behavior, and maintaining order within the correctional facility. This position offers an annual salary of $51,230.40.

Primary Responsibilities:

Supervise inmates in housing units, recreation areas, visitation, and during transport
Conduct hourly security checks, routine headcounts, and facility inspections
Enforce facility rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain discipline and order
Respond to incidents, emergencies, and altercations quickly and effectively
Process inmate intake and release, including booking, fingerprinting, and searches
Maintain accurate logs, incident reports, and inmate records
Monitor surveillance equipment and facility access points
Conduct searches for contraband on inmates, in cells, and around the facility
Escort inmates to court appearances, medical appointments, or work details
Communicate effectively with inmates, coworkers, supervisors, and visitors

Minimum Qualifications:

Age: 18 years or older
Education: High school diploma or GED
Citizenship: U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Driver’s License: Valid Tennessee driver’s license
Background Check: Must pass a criminal background investigation and drug screening
Physical Fitness: Ability to meet physical demands, including standing, walking, lifting, and restraining individuals if necessary
Availability: Ability and willingness to work any 8-hour Shift, and any day.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience in corrections, security, or law enforcement
Knowledge of jail operations and inmate rights
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle confrontational situations

Training:

All newly hired Correctional Officers will complete a structured training program, which includes:

On-the-job training (OJT) with experienced officers
Use of force and defensive tactics
Inmate rights and legal procedures
Fire safety and emergency procedures
De-escalation techniques and communication skills
Contraband recognition and search procedures
Report writing and documentation standards
CPR and basic first aid certification
Tennessee Corrections Institute (TCI) Certification – must be completed within 12 months of hire (if not already certified)

Ongoing training is provided to ensure staff remain current with policies, procedures, and best practices in corrections.
